Gerald "Gerry" Cotton's Obituary
Gerald “Gerry” Cotton passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Gerry was born on September 14, 1939, in Milton, Florida, to Bessie Tallerico and Deward Cotton. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Army and served his country proudly for 24 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant. During his distinguished military career he received multiple citations, including the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions in combat during the Vietnam War; he was also awarded a citation by the German government.
In 1963, Gerry married Shirley Anne Acree, who he loved deeply until her passing in 2002. Gerry and Shirley traveled the world but loved being on Pensacola Beach the most.
After retiring from the Army, Gerry worked for the State of Tennessee before joining Quebecor in Dickson where he rose to the position of Shipping and Distribution Manager; after retiring for a second time and still eager to stay active, he accepted a position as Plant Manager at Direct Line.
Gerry and his family moved to McEwen in 1977; in early 1980’s, he helped raise funds to prevent the consolidation of McEwen High School with Waverly Central High School. While serving as President of the McEwen Lions Club, he also helped establish the Ralph Emery Day Parade in McEwen, Tennessee, which continued for many years.
Gerry was a devoted father and grandfather; he is survived by his two children, Joseph Cotton (Lindsey) and Tracy Cotton, and by his beloved granddaughters, Haley and Skylar, who adored him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bessie Tallerico and Deward Cotton; his sister, Sandra Croucher; and his brother, Jack Bynum. He is survived by his sister, Ann Barber. Gerry also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, brothers- and sisters-in-law, friends, and Tim and Lil Girl who all loved him dearly and will miss him greatly.
Gerry will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his commitment to his community helping so many in need, and his love for his family.
We want to say a very special thank you to the people at Avanti Senior Living Center in Covington, Louisiana, for loving and caring for him for these past two years; you made an impossible situation not only possible but also full of fun and life. He - and we - never doubted you loved your Cat Daddy.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in McEwen, Tennessee, and Pensacola Beach, Florida.
