First, my condolences to his family and friends. Dr. Owens and I worked together at the Church Health Center. Dr. Owens would volunteer his time and dental expertise on Wednesday evenings to see patients. He was a lad back guy easy to work with and talk to.

Anyone that’s been to dental school knows the rarity and value of an excellent teacher and mentor who treated you like a colleague from day one.
Through such a quiet and soft spoken, “lead by example” approach, Barry showed thousands of dental students both a style of compassionate patient care and heartfelt professional mentorship.
If you think about it, the thousands of dentists that experienced Dr. Owens’ kind heart have gone out to treat hundreds of thousands of patients across the country. Barry’s legacy of being, “one of the good ones,“ has likely influenced tens of thousands of patient encounters.
Literally every one of my fellow UT College of dentistry graduates echoed one resounding theme in learning of Dr. Owens passing. “Oh man, he was such a nice guy… Such a kind teacher… One of the good ones.” Rest in peace Barry! Thank you for the gift of kindness in our education and careers. You were a gem!
Wishing peace for Alison and the Owens family during this tough time.
