Nancy G. Thompson

Nancy G. Thompson, 70, passed away on Tuesday, February 6, 2018. Nancy was born on April 8, 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio the oldest child and daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Freestone. Nancy is survived by her husband of the past 45 years, Howard Thompson; two sons, Jeremiah Thompson and his wife, Julie, of Philadelphia and Travis Thompson and his partner, Elizabeth Martin of New Orleans; two grandchildren, Connor and Isabella Thompson; her sister, Joyce Bayles and her husband Don; three brothers, Tom Freestone and his wife Janet, Scott Freestone and his wife Barbara and Donald Freestone and numerous nieces and nephews.Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Dorothy Wiegand Freestone and Tom Freestone, Jr. of Scottsdale, Arizona and her in-laws, Trudy and Marvin Thompson of Phoenix, Arizona. Nancy grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and attended Arizona State University where she obtained BA and MA degrees in Education. After moving to Louisiana with her husband and children in 1982, Nancy attended Southeastern University to obtain Masters Degrees in both Education Administration and Elementary Education. Nancy was a certified Principal and had earned a lifelong teaching certificate. She taught school for many years in Phoenix, Arizona and later in Louisiana whereshe was Assistant Principal at St. Peter Elementary School in Covington, Louisiana. Nancy became Executive Director of St. Michael’s Education Center in Mandeville, Louisiana in 2001 till she retired in 2008. Nancy was very active in community civic activities, and for the past 15 years Nancy donated her time to the Junior League of Greater Covington, Safe Harbor, Leadership St. Tammany (class of 2003 and past president), and most recently the St. Tammany Parish Library Foundation. She was also a Louisiana Master Gardner donating her time to help landscape Habitat for Humanity homes in the local area. Nancy was also involved in the American Association of University Women and the Republican Women’s groups in St. Tammany Parish. Nancy will be missed by her family and many close friends in Arizona and Louisiana. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral services at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home, 2260 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 11:00 AM with visitation on Thursday beginning at 9:00 AM. Interment will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Mrs. Thompson to be made to Safe Harbor of St. Tammany www.safeharbornorthshore.org .
