Alden H. Reine Sr., Ph.D.

Alden Henry Reine, Sr., born August 17, 1937, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2019 at his home in Hammond, Louisiana following a long, courageous battle with prostate cancer. A resident of Hammond following Hurricane Katrina, Alden Reine, Sr. was born and raised in New Orleans’ 7th Ward near Corpus Christi Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Joseph and Jeanne Pratts Reine; and his beloved sister, Jean Reine Hall. Alden, Sr. attended Corpus Christi Catholic Elementary School and St. Augustine High School where he was Valedictorian of the Class of 1955. He obtained a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana; an M.S. Degree in Chemistry from The University of Notre Dame; and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of New Orleans. During his adult life he served in various capacities, including chemist with the Department of Agriculture; Director of Research at Prairie View A&M University; and Director of Sponsored Programs at Xavier University of Louisiana, before retiring to enjoy his longtime passion of gardening. Alden, Sr. is survived by his loving wife, Lois Blanc Reine; his children, Gena Reine, Dr. Alden Reine, Jr., and Susan Reine McCleskey (J.J.); his grandchildren, Jalen McCleskey, Justin McCleskey, Holden Reine, Alexander Reine, and Emma Reine; his devoted cousin, Carolyn Pratts Doucette (Sterling, Sr.); and a host of other cousins, in-laws and extended family including Ronald “Joey” Cagnolatti (Ashley) and their children, Asia, Chloe, Carlin, and Carmen, and Dawn Cagnolatti (Marcus) Strickland and their children, Sage, Isabella, Amelia, and Andrew. Alden, Sr.’s life will be celebrated at St. Katharine Drexel Chapel on the campus of Xavier University, 1 Drexel Drive, New Orleans, Louisiana 70125 on Saturday, February 9, 2019 with a visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m., followed by a memorial mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Alden Reine, Sr. to be made either to St. Augustine High School or to Xavier University of Louisiana.
